Chicago Cares is partnering with Mollison Elementary as a new ongoing programs partner this school year. Mollison is located in the Bronzeville neighborhood and serves 501 Chicago Public School students in kindergarten through eighth grade. This fall, Mollison was also a welcoming school, meaning that it welcomed students from schools that were recently closed as part of the CPS school action plan and provides expanded support for all of their students. Chicago Cares is excited to serve as a resource for Mollison, and programs will be attended by both Mollison students and new students coming from Overton Elementary.

Mollison Elementary’s mission is to provide all students with a high-quality education that meets their academic, socio-emotional, and individual special needs. The school provides a rigorous curriculum that challenges students to become critical thinkers. With the goal of helping Mollison reach its mission and grow its capacity, Chicago Cares will provide supplemental academic programming for students in kindergarten through fifth grade twice a month on Saturdays this school year.

Students in kindergarten through second grade will attend the Read-with-Me Junior program, which will expose them to a variety of books and authors to enhance their reading comprehension and inspire a love for reading. They will also undertake craft activities related to the books they read. Meanwhile, students in third through fifth grade will take part in the Math + Science program in Mollison’s science lab, at which they will conduct science experiments and learn the scientific method. They will also work on math skills through fun and interactive games.

Mollison Elementary administrators requested that Chicago Cares provide programming focused specifically on kindergarten through fifth graders as students work to progress their academic performance. For instance, students in fourth grade will be preparing for testing in science this spring, which makes the Math + Science program an important piece of their experience at Mollison.

Like all of our ongoing children’s programs, the goal of those at Mollison Elementary is to create higher student investment in education and achievement while increasing the school’s capacity to deliver on its mission. Join Chicago Cares in helping students succeed and make this a great kickoff year for our programs at Mollison Elementary!
