This fall marks our third school year partnering with Milton Brunson Math + Science Specialty Elementary School. Currently, Brunson educates more than 600 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade in the Austin neighborhood. As a math and science specialty school, Brunson focuses on those subjects and technology as its core classroom curriculum; as a Communities in Schools Chicago partner, Brunson collaborates with community service providers to enrich its programming with arts, health, and character development opportunities.
Such sessions for Kindergarten through third grade are limited, and any chance the school has to involve those students in additional learning time is exciting. Brunson welcomes Chicago Cares volunteers on Saturday morning for our Reading Adventures project, at which students build confidence and skills through reading, art, and games.
Balancing the school’s emphasis on math and science, Brunson staff requested that Chicago Cares programs for the fourth through sixth grade students focus more on the arts to continue to provide them with diverse experiences. Art Smart encourages students to participate in hands-on art and craft projects. By concentrating on the creative process and providing a fun place to hang out, Chicago Cares volunteers help students develop their self-assurance, imagination, and individuality.
Partnerships with Chicago Cares and other service providers support Brunson’s efforts for both academic and social success. To experience the programs yourself, come volunteer at Brunson!
