Summer’s in full swing, and we’re still coming off of our Serve-a-thon high. Thousands of people from different backgrounds came together and were united in action: To make Chicago and the communities a better place. They were also united in words. In fact, so many of our volunteers shared their stories that #MyChi trended nationally on Twitter.
We accomplished a lot, yet there’s still much to achieve. And, this summer, the Office of the Mayor has asked us to expand our program with the city’s One Summer Chicago initiative — a collaborative effort between the civic and business communities to provide meaningful summer-engagement opportunities for youth. As part of this, several hundred students will be engaged in our intensive, six-week initiative. The program will include interactive classroom modules, service projects, and field trips to cultural institutions. Along the way, we’ll will hone students’ teamwork, communications, and leadership skills while educating them on the issues and opportunities facing their communities and Chicago at large. The students will learn together, serve together, collaborate, and problem-solve. They will see that much more unites than divides them.
These students are a reminder of all that our city has to offer and of all the potential in our next generation. We’re asking them to share their experiences on social media and hope that you will chime in as well. Help us to celebrate what makes our dynamic and diverse city what it is and to continue the #MyChi momentum: Tell us what Chicago means to you this summer with the hashtag #MyChi through words, photos, and videos. We want to hear from you all summer long!
